Dr. Derr’s research explores immigrant wellbeing, specifically the characteristics of the migration experience that influence health and mental health. Her research has been informed by over ten years of working for and with immigrant and refugee communities in the United States and abroad. She has drawn on these experiences to develop a scholarly program of research examining specific challenges to immigrant wellbeing and specific strategies for wellness promotion at the micro, meso, and macro levels. These lines of research have led her to ask the following questions: What are the barriers to social, mental health, and health services for migrants and what factors promote service access and parity? How can city government and social service providers promote socially just contexts of reception for migrants? What are strategies and best practices for training social workers to provide accessible, quality services that improve the health and wellbeing of immigrants and refugees?
